Most residential developments in this city are designed from a specification sheet. Ours was designed by spending time with the site first. We watched how the light moved across it in the morning. We measured the sound from the road. We looked at the bamboo that already existed on the perimeter and decided to build around it rather than remove it.
The courtyard at the centre of the development was not a styling decision. It was a social one. A shared space that all the units face inward toward creates a kind of neighbourhood that gated apartment living usually destroys. The amenities were chosen by asking what families with children, and working professionals with long weeks, would actually use.
